A map can bring many sources together. Making that map useful requires understanding what each source represents, where it applies, and how current it is.

An outage sits inside a wider event

Electric utility operations share an environment with weather, coastal conditions, transportation, and other regional hazards. OpenEMBER brings that wider operating picture into focus through regional maps, configured resources, environmental observations, and advisory chat.

My adaptation focuses on Nassau County, Suffolk County, and the Rockaway area. It builds on the upstream OpenEMBER project, with React and Streamlit interfaces for exploring regional information.

Keep geography and freshness visible

A source with the right subject can still cover the wrong place. An observation can be recent enough for one question and too old for another. Those distinctions should remain visible when information is combined.

The project brings together sources such as NWS weather information, NOAA water observations, USGS gauges, and configured regional layers. Their availability and coverage differ, so the interface needs to communicate gaps as well as observations.

A useful operating picture includes what is known, where it applies, and what is still missing.

Chat benefits from a grounded map

Advisory chat offers another way to explore the regional context. The value depends on the resources and observations available to the application. Source context helps readers assess an answer and decide what needs further review.

The design question

How can a regional workspace make information easier to explore while keeping source boundaries visible? OpenEMBER is an evolving prototype for working through that question. Some configured sources remain unavailable, access-restricted, or limited in freshness, and those constraints belong in the discussion.
